This clearly written text offers an essentially self-contained introduction to the study of plasma dynamics which is suitable for anyone with a background knowledge of electrodynamics and hydrodynamics. The mathematics required is, for the most part, in the normal repertoire of undergraduates studying mathematics, physics, astronomy, or electrical engineering. A particular feature of the book is the authors` comparison of experimental results with predictions from theory. At the outset the authors describe orbits of charged particles in electromagnetic fields. They follow this by a treatment of Jnydromagnetics in which they include discussions of flows, shocks, and wave motion. Chapters on radiation processes and plasma kinetic theory complete the main text. Some results on tensors and Bessel functions are included in appendices. Most of the material in this book has been extensively class-tested and a full selection of problems for students is provided at the end of each chapter. A select list of references is also included, together with recommendations for further reading. Although written for students, this book will also be useful to the trained physicist or engineer who wishes to learn about plasma physics.
