My personal interest in Bernard Boutet de Monvel began with an introduction to his work at the gallery of my friend and colleague, Alain Blondel, some twenty years ago. Thus, my initial thank-you is extended to him for his continued interest in the artist`s work and his invaluable assistance with this project. I would also like to acknowledge the help of other professional associates from across the Atlantic, Joelle Mortier-Valat, and Jean Abou, who contributed his energetic research. Sincere thanks are extended to the family of Bernard Boutet de Monvel. His daughter, Sylvie, and his grandchildren, Bernard Ossude and Diane Ossude, have generously granted me access to Bernard`s studio and to their collection. Their participation in the exhibition has aided us in the understanding of this artist from a personal viewpoint. For their generosity, I would like to acknowledge the lenders—Mrs. Felix de Narvaez, Mr. John Richardson, Mrs. Peter Salm, Mr. Ernst Schuster, Mr. and Mrs. Peter G. Schiff, and Mrs. Rodman Wanamaker—as well as those lenders who wish to remain anonymous. Several of these paintings have never been shown publicly before and having them in the exhibition has enriched the understanding of this artist`s oeuvre for our audience. I am most appreciative of Mr. Charles Bricker`s informative essay and his continual help throughout this venture. For the catalogue design and production, I am grateful to Matt Berman for his creative ideas. My special thanks go the director of the gallery, Jonathan rlallam, who through his avid research, perseverance and enthusiasm has made this exhibition a success. I am grateful to the staff, Debra Pesci and Phyllis Mount, for their hard work and dedication to this project from its inception to fruition, in the planning of both the exhibition and catalogue. I hope this catalogue will be an Inspiration to both art lovers and scholars. Our research and interest in Bernard Boutet de Monvel will continue in hopes of the future discovery of other paintings and further information. Barry Friedman November, 1994
