Baker, John and Alfred Lammer: English Stained Glass.
Stained glass provided an invaluable means of communicating spiritual truths to a largely illiterate population up to the sixteenth century. For this reason it was one of the most important art forms, and some of the finest works of religious art ever created are preserved on the stained glass of the period. The magnificent illustrations in this book, many in colour, reveal the beauty of English stained glass from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries, which is the equal of anything to be found on the Continent. Alfred Lammer has been able to reach with his camera some of the masterpieces of English glass which are otherwise inaccessible to the eye of the public, while the notes by John Baker offer illuminating historical and technical information on the works shown. John Baker is a practising stained glass artist and teacher who was responsible for restoring the ancient glass at Canterbury Cathedral after World War Two.
